Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated the 24 MW Tuirini Small Hydro Electricity Power Project in Aizawl district near the Tuirini river. The event was attended by Home Minister K Sapdanga and chaired by F. Rodingliana, Minister for Power and Electricity. Accompanying officials included B. Lalchhanzova, Minister for Information & Public Relations, and Lt. Col. Clement Lalhmingthana, MLA. The project, costing Rs. 676.98 crore, is financed through a loan from the New Development Bank (NDB) in Shanghai and will be executed as an externally aided initiative.
In his speech, the Chief Minister commended the efforts of the Power Minister and the Power and Electricity (P&E) Department staff in enhancing the state’s power generation capabilities. He highlighted recent developments, including the inauguration of the 10 MW Thenzawl Solar Power Plant and the ongoing construction of a 5 MW Solar Power Plant at Sumsuih, which shows 20 percent construction completion and is also state-owned.
The proposal for the Tuirini project was submitted by the P&E Department on February 5, 2024, under the Externally Aided Project (EAP) framework, receiving approval from the State Level Screening Committee on April 4, 2024. The Department of Economic Affairs approved external funding on February 28, 2025. The financial structure involves 80 percent of the project’s cost covered by a loan from the Central Government and 20 percent provided by the State Government, with a timeline of five years for project completion.
