A 30-year-old man has been arrested for stealing over Rs. 24.8 lakh from Aizawl district court, a police officer said. Aizawl SP Rahool Alwal told a news conference on Saturday that the accused Lalrinngheta, a resident of Aizawl’s Tuikual locality broke into the court of special Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, Aizawl district court on first June during daytime and stole Rs. 24.87,084 from a safe after cutting its hinge using a small hacksaw blade and dao. The accused was previously working as a proxy staff in the court, he said.
He was arrested from his friend’s residence in south Mizoram Lunglei town and was brought to Aizawl on July 24, the SP said. Acting on the complaint by the cashier of the court, the police team from Aizawl police station launched an investigation during which many persons, who were believed to know facts and circumstances were identified and examined, he said. Based on intelligent inputs, Lalrinngheta stood out to be the prime suspect in the burglary case and he has been absconding since he committed the theft, the SP said.
He escaped to Lunglei after lodging at and lavishly spending time with the stolen money in several hotels in Aizawl, Alwal said. Out of Rs. 24.87,084, the accused, who is a drug user, deposited over Rs. 16.5 lakh to his bank account and spent the rest on buying a scooter worth Rs. 2.5 lakh and some garments. Rs. 36,000 cash was recovered from him, while his bank account amounting to Rs. 7.36 lakh has been seized, Alwal said, He said that the accused now is in police custody and they have sought for more remand for further questioning.
