600 crores loss to agriculture and power department due to floods in Tripura

The state’s severe floods has caused losses to the agriculture and power departments totaling more than Rs 600 crores. Speaking on the matter, Power and Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath claimed that the heavy rains had seriously damaged the agricultural industry. “In agriculture, 68,826 hectares of land have been either fully or partially damaged, with a production loss estimated at 2.43 lakh metric tons. The preliminary report puts the total damage at Rs 532.25 Crores, and this figure is expected to rise,” he said.

The Minister further stated that significant losses have been incurred by 1,41,406 farmers. “Landslides have destroyed 4,000 hectares of jhum agriculture area, inundated 1.5 lakh hectares of Aman paddy, and damaged 7,000 hectares of Ayush rice. We have asked for all required seeds to be provided by the National Seed Corporation. 5,614 hectares of horticultural land have been damaged, affecting 27,000 farmers and resulting in a 30.497 lakh production loss and a financial loss of Rs 167 crores, the Minister continued.

There are 9,90,451 customers in Tripura. Of them, 3,19,773—roughly 35%—are impacted, and 9,05,614 are active customers. 1,49,000 of these customers are still having issues. Thus far, there have been 1,603 broken poles, 501 damaged transformers, 642 kilometers of downed wiring, submerged 33/66 kV substations at Ampi and Jolaibari, and nine broken 33 kV lines. He informed reporters that the loss was believed to be around Rs 9.02 crores, albeit this figure could rise.
