Mizoram has achieved a significant milestone as the first state in Northeast India to inaugurate a fish canning facility, aimed at enhancing the region’s blue economy and promoting sustainable fisheries. The facility, inaugurated in Aizawl by Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Lalruatkima, was constructed at a cost of ₹65 lakh in Zawlnuam, Mamit district, close to the Tripura border.
This initiative, developed under the Zawlnuam Fishery Cooperative Society, is designed to support local fish farmers by improving market access and facilitating the value addition of smaller fish into processed products. The minister emphasized the necessity of quality control and alignment with consumer demand as essential factors for the industry’s success.
Additionally, the new plant is anticipated to generate employment opportunities and contribute to the government’s overarching vision of enhancing rural infrastructure and economic development in remote and border regions. The inauguration included demonstrations and discussions that underlined advanced processing techniques, packaging innovations, and emergency response strategies relevant to the fisheries sector.
