After being without any pig casualty for 4 days in a row due to African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, Mizoram on Wednesday registered one pig casualty reported from Baktawng village in Serchhip district, state animal husbandry & veterinary department officials said. The officials said that neither casualty nor culling of pigs have been reported on December 7, 8 and 9, but 23 pigs were culled on Tuesday. While one pig died on Wednesday, no report of pig being culled has been received on the same day. The total number of pig casualty during this year has risen to 14,873 as of Wednesday with 258 villages being declared as infected by the veterinary department. According to records maintained by the state veterinary department, 12,791died during 2022 while 11,594 pigs were culled during the same year to preventfurther spread of the ASF.Last year witnessed less number of ASF toll when 1,039 pigs died and 928 were culled.
