Lalduhoma also said that Assam Border Area Development Minister Atul Bora will visit Mizoram next month. Addressing a press conference in Aizawl, the Chief Minister said that he recently met Sarma in Guwahati and they discussed the border issue.

He said the two neighboring states have agreed to maintain peace on the border and resolve the long-standing dispute. “We have agreed that no more violence will be allowed on the border. We are making efforts to resolve the dispute,” Lalduhoma said. The border dispute between Mizoram and Assam took a turn for the worse in July 2021 when the police forces of the two states exchanged fire on the inter-state border, killing six Assamese policemen and a civilian.

Mizoram claims that an area of 509 square miles of Inner Line Reserved Forest as notified in the year 1875 under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) 1873 falls within its territory. On the other hand, Assam considered the border shown in the prepared map.

Vast areas within the reserved forest now come under Assam. Similarly, as per the 1933 demarcation, part of the area is now on the Mizoram side. There is no ground demarcation of boundaries between the two states.
