Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday said that the inauguration of the new Bairabi-Sairang railway line will mark a milestone in the history of Mizoram. Vaishnaw arrived in Aizawl on Friday to participate in a function where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new railway line on Saturday. Soon after arriving at the lone Lenpui airport, the Union Railway Minister visited Sairang railway station, about 20 km from Aizawl. Speaking to reporters, Vaishnaw said that the railway line is a part of fulfilling India’s Act East policy. “The new railway line will improve connectivity and bring development. It is a milestone for Mizoram,” he said, Vaishnaw announced that goods trains will start arriving in Sairang from Sunday. He said that Mizoram will now be able to easily transport its fruits and rare agricultural products, including dragon fruit, to other parts of the country like the Srinagar’s apple coming to Delhi.
The Union Railway Minister express hope that the new railway line may foster good relation between Mizoram and the rest of the country besides improving connectivity in the region. PM Modi will address a public meeting at Lammual or Assam Rifles ground in Aizawl at 10 am on Saturday during which he will inaugurate the 51.38 km long Bairabi-Sairang railway line and flag off Rajdhani express train to connect Aizawl with Delhi’s Anand Vihar station, and two other trains- Aizawl – Guwahati and Aizawl-Kolkata, officials said. He will lay the foundation stones for multiple projects worth over Rs. 9,000 crore, including 45 km Aizawl bypass road, a gas bottling plant at Mualkhang near Aizawl, Thenzawl–Sialsuk road, Khankawn–Rongura road, Chhimtuipui river bridge on the Lawngtlai–Siaha road and Khelo India multipurpose indoor hall for sports development, they said.
He will also virtually inaugurate a residential school at Kawrthah in aspirational west Mizoram’s Mamit district under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) scheme and Eklavya Model Residential school at Tlangnuam in Aizawl, they said. The PM will fly to Manipur, his first visit since the ethnic violence broke out in May 2023, after attending the public meeting in Aizawl the same day, officials said.
