Central committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), apex Mizo body, on Saturday distributed Rs. 56.54 lakh to the victims of cyclone Remal which hit Mizoram on May 27 and 28. At least 34 people died due to massive landslides and mudslides triggered by the cyclone which was accompanied by extremely heavy rain on May 28 while around 70 families were evacuated to safer places in Aizawl district alone. The YMA distributed the money contributed by its members, especially from the units in Aizawl city. While those victims located in Aizawl and nearby villages received the relief, those in Lunglei, Serchhip, Saitual, Mamit andKhawzawl districts are sent to the respective sub-headquarters to disburse the same to the victims.
The YMA also handed over Rs 50,000 worth relief materials and essential items at the relief camp specially arranged for lodging Churachandpur-based ‘motherless home’ at Beraw locality in Aizawl on Saturday. The inmates ofthe relief camp are part of the internally displaced people of Manipur taking shelter in Mizoram comprising 24 children and 4 workers. Special assistance was provided as they are in dire need of help in view of their need for special care, workers of the ‘home’ said.
It also handed over Rs. 1 lakh as humanitarian assistance to 21 Myanmar refugee families lodged at Myanmar border Cherhlun village in southern Hnahthial district on the same day. YMA’aHnahthial sub-headquarters will make further arrangements to disburse the aid to the refugees who are currently facing acute shortage of food. EOM
