CEO holds press conference on Lok Sabha General Elections

A press conference regarding The General Elections to the Lok Sabha, 2024 was held by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Mr. Madhup Vyas, IAS at the I&PR Auditorium today at 5:30 p.m. CEO Mizoram Mr. Madhup Vyas announced that Mizoram Parliamentary Constituency is in phase 1 of the general elections. He announced the following date for the general elections:

Date of issue of gazette notification – 20th March, 2024

Last date of making nominations – 27th March, 2024

Date for scrutiny of nominations – 28th March, 2024

Last date for withdrawal of candidatures – 30th March, 2024

Date of poll – 19th April, 2024

Date of counting – 4th June, 2024

Date before which election shall be completed – 6th June, 2024

The CEO urged each and every eligible voter to cast their votes and requested the media’s cooperation and diligence in disseminating the Do’s and Dont’s of the election. The final electoral roll was published on 8th February, 2024. According to the electoral roll, there are 4,14,777 male electors, 4,41,520 female electors and 4,980 service voters, which makes a total of 8,61,277 electors in Mizoram. Aizawl District has the highest number of electors (2,88,268) and Hnahthial District has the lowest number of electors (16,257). 36-Tuichawng, Lawngtlai District is the Assembly Constituency with the highest number of electors (36,493) while 34-Thorang, Lunglei District has the lowest (15,152). The gender ratio is 1064, and Mamit District is the only district where there are more male electors than female electors. Additionally, there are 36,214 youth voters (18-19 years old), 4,758 senior citizen voters (85 years and above) and 3,399 PwD (Persons with Disability) voters.

There are 1,276 polling stations in Mizoram, which is 101 more than that of the 2019 Lok Sabha General Elections. Assured Minimum Facilities (AMF) will be provided at each polling station, and there will be one of each polling station that is completely managed by women and PwD officials in every constituency. There will be at least one Model Polling Station per constituency and webcasting will be enabled for all Critical Polling Stations and 50% of all polling stations. Postal ballot/home voting will be available for PwD and senior citizen voters. This election will be eco-friendly, and the commission has advised parties and candidates to refrain from using single use plastics. 3000 State Police officers and 15 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will be on duty to implement law and order services. Multiple teams have been assigned to monitor election expenditure, and there are serious efforts to curb the menace of drugs, alchohol and other harmful substances.

State Level Media Cell has been set up under the Addl. Chief Electoral Officer, Mizoram. There is also a Media Centre at the CEO’s office and Media Certification and Monitoring Committees (MCMC) have been established for scrutiny and pre-certification of advertisement. Proper training has been imparted to the election officials, and SVEEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) will be implemented in vulnerable communities to increase voter turnout. The latest model of EVM and VVPAT, M3 will be used across all polling stations. Air ambulance will be available in case of any medical emergency for faster, more efficient health services. Model Code of Conduct will be observed from the date of announcement of the general elections, and all parties and candidates are expected to abide by the code. Dr. H. Lianzela, Addl. CEO, Mr. James Lalnunmawia, Jt. CEO and other Election Officials were also present at the press conference.
