Chief minister inaugurates 10 mw thenzawl solar power plant

The Chief Minister of Mizoram, Shri Lalduhoma, today inaugurated the 10 MW Thenzawl Solar Power Plant. Shri F. Rodingliana, Minister for Power & Electricity (P&E), attended the programme as the Guest of Honour.

The project has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 74.82 crore with funding support from NABARD.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister described the occasion as a significant and joyful milestone for Mizoram. He expressed his appreciation to NABARD, the P&E Minister and all officers, engineers, and workers involved in the successful completion of the project.

Key points highlighted by the Chief Minister included:

  1. Work on a 5 MWp Solar Park at Sumsuih has already commenced and is expected to be completed shortly.
  2. The State has further proposals for solar parks at Keifang (10 MWp), Tumtuitlang, Serchhip (10 MWp), Bawkmual–Hmunhmeltha (10 MWp), Denlung Ram, Hnahthial (10 MWp), Tlabung Tlang, Lallen (6 MWp) and Dawhzau Zau, Lamzawl (20 MWp).
  3. The foundation stone for the 24 MW Tuirini Hydel Project, estimated at Rs. 676 crore, will be laid in the near future.
  4. Planning for the 132 MW Tuivai Hydel Electric Project is progressing steadily. Once completed, Mizoram will achieve substantial energy self-sufficiency.
  5. Seven older hydel power plants are proposed to be outsourced due to high maintenance costs, and several firms have expressed interest in this initiative.
  6. Recognising that energy must remain affordable, the Government has decided not to increase electricity tariffs for five years. This commitment has been honoured so far, benefiting economically weaker sections and small entrepreneurs.
  7. From 1 August 2025, online electricity bill payment has been enabled across Mizoram.
  8. The State has been regularly clearing outstanding power dues, thereby qualifying for rebates. Between December 2023 and December 2025, rebates amounting to Rs. 6,57,93,152 have been availed.
  9. Mizoram’s financial position is steadily improving. While visible outcomes may take time, fiscal health has strengthened. Recently, the Reserve Bank of India acknowledged Mizoram as one of the smaller states with a comparatively strong financial position.

Other development initiatives undertaken over the past two years were also highlighted.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri F. Rodingliana, Minister for Power & Electricity, stated that Mizoram’s annual power demand is increasing at around 7.6 per cent, with peak demand having reached 160 MW. He said the Government is pursuing multiple strategies to meet this growing demand, including pump storage power linked with the Vankal Solar Plant. The expected laying of the foundation stone for the 24 MW Tuirini Hydel Electric Project next year, and expediting the 132 MW Tuivai project.
