Severe windstorms accompanied by rain and hail have caused widespread damage across multiple districts of Nagaland, impacting homes, infrastructure, and public facilities, according to the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA).
Officials reported that strong winds uprooted trees, damaged electric poles, and disrupted power supply in several areas. Despite the scale of destruction, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
The Chumoukedima district emerged as one of the worst-affected regions, where around 31 families suffered damage to their homes in areas including Piphema and Sovima. Both kutcha and pucca structures were affected, along with community infrastructure.
In the Peren district, 15 families and a primary health center were impacted due to a combination of windstorms and flash floods. At least three houses were completely destroyed, while several others sustained severe or partial damage. Additional incidents were reported from villages such as Pehlan and New Jalukie.
Preliminary reports from Mokokchung, Wokha, Tuensang, Niuland, and Zunheboto districts also indicate varying degrees of damage to residential buildings and public infrastructure. In Mon District, a government school suffered significant damage, with the roofs of five classrooms blown off, disrupting normal academic activities.
The NSDMA stated that damage assessments, including crop losses, are currently underway, and relief measures have been initiated in affected areas.
Meanwhile, the authority has issued a weather alert warning of continued unstable conditions across the state from March 17 to 21. Several districts, including Dimapur, Kohima, and Tuensang, are expected to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall, with wind speeds reaching up to 40 kmph in isolated areas.
Citizens have been advised to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and take necessary safety precautions as authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
