Congress announces Rtd Police Officer Lalbiakzama as its candidate for lone Mizoram Lok Sabha seat

Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Lal Thanzara on Thursday announced at the Aizawl Congress Bhavan that former Mizoram Police Service (MPS) officer Lalbiakzama, who retired as state Home Secretary is the official nominee of the Congress party for the coming election to the lone Mizoram Lok Sabha seat.

Election to the Lok Sabha Mizoram seat is scheduled to be held on April 19 during the first phase of the general elections.

MPCC is the third political party in the state to announce its nominee to contest the coming Parliamentary polls. Earlier, the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) announced on March 11 that Richard Vanlalhmangaiha (46), a resident of Aizawl is the official nominee of the party to contest the upcoming Parliamentary elections. People’s Conference party, founded by former Chief Minister Brig. T. Sailo named Rita Malsawmi as its nominee to contest the Mizoram seat.

Mizo National Front (MNF) party is scheduled to announce its candidate soon while the BJP state unit, though had kick-started the election campaign, is yet to make any announcements about when the name of the official nominee will be declared.

National People’s Party (NPP) national secretary Dr.Lalrintluanga Jahau said that the NPP will not contest Mizoram Lok Sabha seat in the coming Parliamentary Polls. The NPP also had refrain from contesting the last election to the 40-member Mizoram legislative assembly held on November 7 last.

Notification for election to Mizoram Lok Sabha seat was issued on Wednesday which says that last date of filing nominations is fixed on March 27 and scrutiny will be undertaken on the next day. Last day of withdrawal of nomination is March 30 and polling day at April 19.

No nominations have been filed till date.
