Sangau, a town in Mizoram’s southern district of Lawngtlai, bore the brunt of a powerful hailstorm around 3 PM on Tuesday, resulting in significant destruction to numerous residences. The relentless hailstorm wreaked havoc, particularly on houses with tin roofs, leaving a trail of devastation across the area. While the exact tally of affected homes remains undetermined, several households, including government quarters, suffered severe damage.
In addition to the structural damage, the hailstorm also caused disruptions to transportation as roads in certain localities became impassable, leading to traffic congestion. Residents, such as H. Lalremruata and H. Tialira from Bazar Vengthar Kawn locality, found their homes invaded by hailstones, prompting volunteers from the Young Lai Association (YLA) to assist in the cleanup efforts.
Eyewitness accounts described hailstones as large as eggs, with some of them inflicting damage beyond property, such as destroying dish antennas used for local TV channels.
