Eastern Command Chief discusses border security with Mizoram Governor and Chief Minister

In a series of crucial meetings on Tuesday, the Chief of Army’s Eastern Command, Lt Gen R.C. Tiwari, engaged with key officials in Mizoram, focusing on the prevailing security situation along the borders with Myanmar and the operational readiness of the Assam Rifles to tackle emerging challenges. Accompanied by senior Army officers, Lt Gen Tiwari convened a meeting with Mizoram Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati at the Raj Bhavan, where discussions centered on the operational readiness of the Assam Rifles in addressing security concerns along the India-Myanmar borders.

A Mizoram government official disclosed that Army officers briefed the Governor on the Assam Rifles’ preparedness to confront challenges along the frontiers, underlining their operational capabilities. Subsequently, Lt Gen Tiwari held discussions with Chief Minister Lalduhoma at the civil secretariat, focusing on border issues and other related matters. In a social media post, the Chief Minister shared insights from the meeting, highlighting discussions on maximizing local utilization of the Assam Rifles ground, infrastructure development like the Zokhawsang bypass road for farmers, and efforts to combat drug-related activities to enhance coordination.

Mizoram shares 510 km of borders with Myanmar and 318 km with Bangladesh. The Assam Rifles oversees security along the Myanmar border, while the Border Security Force (BSF) is responsible for the Bangladesh frontier. Since the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, Mizoram has witnessed an influx of over 34,350 refugees from the Chin state. Additionally, ethnic unrest in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh has led to 1,433 tribals seeking refuge in Mizoram since November 2022.
