Five candidates are in the fray for the upcoming bye-election to Dampa assembly constituency in Mizoram’s north-western Mamit district bordering Bangladesh as the last date of filing nomination ends at 3pm on Tuesday, state election officials said. People’s Conference (PC) party candidate K. Zahmingthanga filed his nomination on Tuesday to be the fifth nominee for the bye-poll to be held on November 11. Scrutiny of nominations will be conducted on Wednesday while the last day for withdrawal of candidature is fixed on Friday. The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) candidate Vanlalsailova and candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee Lalhmingthanga Sailo have filed their nomination papers on Wednesday and Thursday respectively while Indian National Congress (INC) nominee John Rotluangliana and Mizo National Front (MNF) candidate Dr. R. Lalthangliana filed their nominations on Saturday.

The bye-poll is necessitated by the demise of the sitting legislator of the seat Lalrintluanga Sailo of the MNF on July 21. An electorate of 20,790 (10,605 male and 10,185 female voters) will decide the fates of 5 nominees in the bye-election to the Dampa assembly constituency on November 11. State chief electoral officer (CEO) Dr. Lalrozama on Tuesday said preparations for the coming Dampa bye-election are being undertaken smoothly sans violation of election model code of conduct (EMCC) or complaints of violation. Lalrozama said out of 41 polling stations in the Dampa assembly constituency, 3 of them (Silsury-1, Silsury-2 and Silsury-3) are identified as critical polling stations as they are located near the international border and 50 kilometres from the Marpara Police Station which is the nearest police station. “Three sections of the central armed police force (CAPF) will be deployed to ensure free and fair elections in the polling stations,” Lalrozama said.

He further stated that the international border fencing is yet to be completed in this section and a plethora of weapons and explosives had been seized in the area earlier. Silsury-1 polling station has the largest number of electors at 1,103, while Zopui polling station having only 30 voters is the smallest polling station, he said, adding that the Zopui polling station being accessible only by foot and without being electrified, special arrangements are being made in consultation with the Election Commission of India.
