Former Army Chief sworn in as Governor of Mizoram

Former Army Chief and union minister of state Gen. Vijay Kumar Singh was sworn-in as the 25th governor of Mizoram at the circular lawn of the Raj Bhavan in Aizawl at 11 am on Thursday. Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court justice Vijay Bishnoi administered the oath of office to Singh. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by state chief minister Lalduhoma, his cabinet colleagues, assembly speaker Lalbiakzama, former chief ministers – Lal Thanhawla and Zoramthanga, leader of opposition in the state legislature Lalchhandama Ralte, member of Lok Sabha Richard Vanlalhmangaiha, Rajya Sabha member K. Vanlalvena, legislators chief secretary Khilli Ram Meena and senior officials.

Singh, appointed as the Mizoram governor by President Droupadi Murmu on December 24, arrived at the lone Lengpui airport near Aizawl where he was received by Lalduhoma, Lalbiakzama, home minister K. Sapdanga, and Meena.V.K. Singh was born on May 10, 1951. He served as the 24th Chief of Army Staff of India. After retiring from the Indian Army, he entered politics and was elected as a Member of Parliament from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, on a BJP ticket in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first term, he served as the Minister of State for External Affairs, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), and Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation. In Modi’s second term, he held the portfolios of Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways and Civil Aviation.
