Mizoram Commerce & Industries Minister F Rodingliana on Thursday inaugurated HathkarghaMela/State Handloom Exhibition’ to commemorate the 10th National Handloom Day. The event, held at the Exhibition Hall on the Millennium Centre Rooftop, is jointly organised by the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, and the Commerce & Industries Department. It will run from August 1 to 14. Rodingliana highlighted the significant economic contribution of the handloom sector across various regions of Mizoram. He noted that handloom is a vital means of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Mizo people. He emphasised the importance of supporting local weavers to sustain and advance this traditional craft.
The Minister commended the Commerce & Industries Department for their efforts in guiding and assisting those involved in the handloom sector. Rodingliana stressed the importance of government support for skilled artisans, advocating for continuous assistance under the ‘Handholding Policy’ to ensure the development and success of handloom enterprises. He called on the department to develop new strategies to further aid and uplift local weavers.
Commerce & Industries Department director, Maria C T Zuali, also addressed the gathering, expressing gratitude to the participants. She praised Mizo women for their creativity and skill in producing diverse handloom products and encouraged continued dedication in this craft. The event’s inaugural ceremony was chaired by deputy director Hunthianghlimi (Handloom, Textiles & Handicrafts). Various heritage handloom products were showcased, demonstrating the rich cultural artistry of the weavers. The State Handloom Exhibition features 60 stalls and will be open until August 14, 2024.
