Traffic through Kolasib town came to a complete halt today as the Mizoram Tipper Association and the Kolasib Joint Action Committee (JAC) launched a blockade along the National Highway to protest the deteriorating condition of the road. According to reports, the protest was highly effective, with almost no vehicles seen on the usually busy stretch of road. Passenger transport services, including the popular Sumo taxis, were suspended as all counters in Kolasib remained closed, leaving travellers stranded and the town unusually quiet.
14 JAC members stationed at Rengtekawn, Kolasib were arrested by Police including the committee’s Vice Chairman, Pu H. Lalchhanchhuaha. Pu Lalchhanchhuaha said the agitation would continue until the government took concrete steps to repair the damaged highway. “Our suffering due to the poor road conditions has been unbearable,” he said. “Although we considered calling off the blockade out of respect for the government, we were instead met with threats.
That was very disappointing. The government must realise that the people of Kolasib deserve proper roads and fair treatment.” He further stated that residents feel neglected and vowed that the JAC would continue to push for improved road connectivity across the district.
