Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Madhup Vyas on Saturday said that home voting through postal ballots for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) and home voting process, for the first time in Parliamentary polls, has begun in some districts for the coming general election to the lone Mizoram Lok Sabha seat to be held on April 19. Vyas expressed the hope that, as was Mizoram being lauded for conducting peaceful and free and fair elections, it will also be repeated in the upcoming Parliamentary elections.
Concerted and series of efforts are being made to ensure higher percentage of polling including introduction of polling through postal ballots, not only for polling officials but also for those who are going to be engaged in essential services under private companies on polling day, he said. He said that voters, who are college students, will be allowed to exercise franchise in their native villages by granting them special leave and the students will be regarded as attending classes by showing the indelible ink on their fingers to the college authorities.
The CEO said that of 1,276 polling stations in the state 136 will be fully manned by women while one polling station at Zarkawt neighbourhood within Aizawl North-3 assembly segment will be manned solely by PwDs He said that 7 polling stations, 3 in southern Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district and one each in Assam border Kolasib district, Khawzawl, Serchhip and Hnahthial districts will be manned by youths.
He said that around 4,600 strong polling officials have been undergoing training under master trainers in state, district and assembly segment levels. Aside from 3,000 state police personnel 12 companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) will be deployed to ensure free, fair and peaceful polls, he said, adding that 2 companies of CAPF have already arrived while 10 other companies will be arriving on Monday.
