In a significant crackdown on illicit drug trade, Assam Rifles made one of the largest heroin haul at Melbuk near Myanmar border in Mizoram’s Champhai district on Wednesday when over 5 kilos of the dreaded drugs was seized. In a joint operation with the officials of Mizoram-Myanmar border Zokhawthar Police Station, the paramilitary force guarding the border recovered a staggering 5 kilos and 394 grams of heroin, valued at a whopping Rs 37.75 crore.The operation was carried out by a combined team of Assam Rifles with officials of Police Department deployed at Zokhawthar, based on specific information. The entire consignment of heroin and apprehended individual, a resident of Champhai town have been handed over to Police Department Zokhawthar for further legal proceedings. Earlier on Tuesday, the joint team had recovered 1 kilo and 376 grams of heroin worth Rs 9.6 Crore from Zokhawthar, Indo-Myanmar border town in Champhai district from the possession of a Myanmarese national from Tahan in Kalaymyo township of Myanmar.
Meanwhile, Mizoram excise and narcotics department recovered 112 kgs of ganja at Mizoram-Manipur border Kawlbem village in Saitual district around 7:00pm on Wednesday. A Myanmar national identified as Khualdokap, 44, of Tiddim District, Chin State, Myanmar was arrested in this connection. The cannabis was smuggled from Myanmar and meant to be sold in Mizoram, department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga said. The arrested person was booked under relevant sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 was produced before the court on Thursday. Zohmingthanga said the department has so far recovered 238 kilos and 633 grams of ganja in Mizoram during January and February this year. The department also recovered 15 kilos and 199 grams of heroin and 96 kilos and 485 grams of Methamphetamine during the period, along with huge amount of over the counter drugs and liquors.
The department attributed the spurt in smuggling of drugs in Mizoram to political turmoil in neighbouring Myanmar and Manipur. In another significant operation, an illegal poppy plantation was unearthed in the forests near Khaikhy village, close to the Myanmar border
