The Mizoram Indigenous Games and Cultural Festival has begun in Aizawl, focusing on the preservation and promotion of traditional Mizo games and cultural heritage. Officials at the event stressed the significance of maintaining indigenous traditions in the face of the rising popularity of modern sports globally and nationally. They warned that traditional Mizo games are at risk of being forgotten and commended the collaborative efforts of Doordarshan and the Mizoram Indigenous Games Association (MIGA) in reviving these ancestral practices.

Speakers underscored that while culture is inherently dynamic, with lifestyle and dietary changes, it is vital that such evolution does not entail the loss of essential traditional knowledge and customs. The younger generation was particularly encouraged to reconnect with and advocate for indigenous games and cultural values.

The opening ceremony featured a welcome address from V.L. Thakima, the Secretary of the organizing committee, alongside a report presentation by MIGA’s General Secretary, Lalbiaknunga. Cultural performances were showcased by the Chhawkhlei Cultural Club, with musical entertainment provided by artists Lilac and David Darlong.

The festival, which runs until Saturday, includes a variety of competitions in traditional games like Inbuan (Mizo wrestling), Insuknawr, Insaihruipawh, Inarpasual, Kalchhet, Invawr, and Kawikah. Evening sessions will highlight performances by well-known artists from Mizoram, celebrating the region’s rich cultural diversity.
