Amid IndiGo’s flight cancellation crisis entering its fourth day, the Railway Ministry announced the addition of 116 coaches across 37 premium trains to ease travel for stranded passengers. The airline’s operations have been severely affected, with over 400 flights cancelled, causing chaos at airports and prompting passenger protests and complaints about lost baggage.

The expanded train services will operate from major junctions, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Jammu Tawi, Patna, Howrah, and Chennai, and will continue as long as the flight disruptions persist. Northern Railway has added extra coaches to meet rising demand: one 3AC coach each to the Jammu Rajdhani Express and Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express, and one AC Chair Car coach each to the Chandigarh and Amritsar Shatabdi Express.

Central Railway will run six special trains on key routes on December 6 and 7, including Pune-SMVT Bengaluru, Pune-New Delhi, LTT-Madgaon, CSMT-New Delhi, LTT-Lucknow, and Nagpur-CSMT, to accommodate additional passengers.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers apologised for the disruptions in a video statement, estimating that flight cancellations would be below 1,000 on Saturday, with full restoration of operations expected between December 10 and 15.
