The aviation regulator DGCA has granted IndiGo a six-month extension to lease two Boeing 777 aircraft from Turkish Airlines, subject to certain conditions, sources said on Thursday.
This decision comes less than three months after DGCA had given IndiGo a final three-month extension until August 31 and had instructed the airline not to seek any further extensions. The earlier move was influenced by Turkiye’s support for Pakistan amid India’s strikes on terror camps in May.
The extension allows IndiGo to continue operating the Turkish Airlines planes on a wet lease, which includes aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance. IndiGo uses these two B777-300ER aircraft to operate direct flights between Delhi and Mumbai to Istanbul.
In a statement, IndiGo expressed gratitude for the extension, noting that it provides much-needed operational stability during current geopolitical challenges and will help meet rising international travel demand. The airline also assured full compliance with DGCA’s conditions. IndiGo added that this approval will benefit Indian travelers by ensuring seamless connectivity to Istanbul and beyond during the peak travel season.
