Inter-ministerial team assesses Cyclone Remal’s impact in Mizoram

The aftermath of Cyclone Remal and its devastating effects were the focal points of a crucial meeting held on Saturday evening in Aizawl, where DM&R Minister K. Sapdanga convened with an Inter-Ministerial Team comprising representatives from the central government and various state departments. Upon their arrival at Lengpui airport, the Central Team wasted no time in visiting key sites such as the under-construction bridge at Sihhmui and assessing crop damage at Sairang Dinthar, caused by flooding from the Tlawng River.

During the meeting, Minister Sapdanga briefed the team on the extensive damage inflicted by Cyclone Remal on Mizoram’s infrastructure, including roads, water supply systems, electricity networks, and ongoing projects. He lamented the loss of 34 lives and the significant destruction of both public and private property, estimating a minimum of ₹237.6 crore would be required for rehabilitation and repairs.Heading the Inter-Ministerial Team is Abhijit Sinha, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, with members including Jinta Das from the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmer’s Welfare; Mahesh Kumar from the Ministry of Finance; Rajveer Singh from the Ministry of Jal Shakti; Adelbert Susngi from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways; and Moti Ram from the Ministry of Rural Development.

Following the meeting, the team conducted field inspections at Melthum, Hlimen, Kulikawn, and ITI to assess the extent of the damage caused by the cyclone.On Sunday, the team expanded their assessment to include critical infrastructure such as the Greater Aizawl Water Supply Scheme Phase I & II, SIPMIU 37 MLDB Pump House, and roads like Aizawl – Muallungthu – Khumtung and Aizawl – Darlung. They also visited areas affected by landslides, including near the Zoram Medical College hostels in Aizawl, meeting with affected residents from Aibawk and Hlimen.
