Landowners in Kolasib district bordering Assam have called off their agitation 9 hours after imposing blockade on NH-306 on Wednesday following assurance from the state government to take steps towards addressing their plights, a leader of Kolasib District Land Owners’ Association (KDLOA) said. The leader said that they have decided to call off the blockade in the evening after Kolasib deputy commissioner assured them that he would push the state government towards addressing the plight of the landowners. The agitators also agreed to call off their agitation after learning that the state government is taking steps towards the direction of the Supreme Court to revoke the Roadside Reserve Forest notification of 1965, he said.
Over 2,000 landowners along the NH-6 and NH-306 between Vairengte and Mualkhang in Kolasib district have called an indefinite blockade on NH-306 demanding the state government to resolve land ownership issues and lift the freezing order on lands, which they claimed are privately owned. The landowners began their agitation by blocking NH-306 at Sethawn in Kolasib district at 6 am on Wednesday morning. However, Mizoram connectivity with the rest of the country was unaffected as vehicle continue to ply on the national highway during the agitation, a senior police officer said.
He said that the government deployed large number of police personnel at the site to ensure that traffic movement remained unaffected. A few people sustained minor injuries during scuffles between police and agitators, he said. Kolasib District Land Owners’ Association (KDLOA) alleged that their long-held lands along the NH-306 and NH-6 between Vairengte and Mualkhang in Kolasib district had been frozen by the state forest department by designating them as Roadside Reserve Forest (RRF) since 2020.
