Mizo CM republishes His Majesty’s Headhunter book

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on saturday relaunched ‘His Majesty’s Headhunter,’ a poignant narrative shedding light on the often-overlooked siege of Kohima. Authored by esteemed Naga poet and politician Mmhonlumo Kikon, the book has already garnered attention in the market. However, Friday’s event marked a special relaunch specifically for the audience in Mizoram. Lalduhoma said that the book, which delves into the events surrounding the siege of Kohima in June 1944 and its significance, is highly commendable and holds great importance for the people of Mizoram. He noted that various personalities from Mizoram, including the former state Finance Minister JohnLalsangzuala and the late Lalbuaia Lushai, have contributed to the historical events are discussed in the book. He emphasised that the events depicted in the book, often referred to as the ‘Stalingrad of the east,’ marked a significant turning point in world history, with Japanese forces being halted in their tracks and the bravery of the Naga people and other ethnic groups being highlighted. Kikon, the author, expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister and highlighted that the book aims to shed light on the contributions and sacrifices of various individuals and communities, providing a nuanced understanding of history. Furthermore, the Chief Minister acknowledged that the book not only adds to the understanding of the historical events surrounding the Indian-British conflict during World War II but also provides insights into the present-day issues faced by states like Nagaland, which continue to grapple with the legacies of the past. He emphasised the importance of recognizing and learning from history to navigate contemporary challenges effectively.

The book launch event was presided over by Dr B Lalzarliana, with Professor NgurlianaSailo providing a comprehensive review of the book’s content. Copies of the book were distributed to students and interested individuals.” Kikon is BJP national spokesperson and secretary in charge of Mizoram. His Majesty’s Headhunters offers a fresh lens through which to view Nagaland and its formidable warriors, uncovering the lesser-known tale of the siege, hailed as one of the pivotal clashes of D-Day and famously dubbed the ‘Stalingrad of the East’ by Western analysts. The book of Kikon, a two-time legislator in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, delves into the enduring impact of the Second World War on North Eastern India. Drawing from meticulously researched historical sources, including firsthand accounts from officers and soldiers who braved the battlefields of Kohima, the narrative grips readers from start to finish. Kikon’s work adeptly reveals the complex dynamics of British colonialism in the Naga Hills.

While many have recounted the events leading up to Kohima, the true story remains untold by the Nagas themselves. The pivotal role played by the Naga people in halting the Japanese advance and preventing the fall of Kohima, and subsequently the Dimapur railway station, remains a vital chapter yet to be fully explored.This well-crafted tome not only unveils the history of a small town but also commemorates an epic struggle that helped shape the course of world history, ensuring the preservation of freedom for future generations.
