Mizo Students Rally Against Unqualified Teachers

Hundreds of students, led by the Mizo Students’ Union (MSU), held a protest rally on Monday demanding the immediate removal of part-time college teachers who lack the required qualifications despite years of service. Starting at Vanapa Hall and ending at the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education in Zarkawt, the students marched 2 km, chanting slogans against unqualified assistant professors appointed between 2008 and 2017. MSU President B. Lalkhawngaihzuala said such appointments harm students’ futures and warned against any contract extensions.

Authorities confirmed that show-cause notices were issued, with a 15-day response deadline, and dismissals will follow within five days after. Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana clarified the current ZPM government did not hire these teachers; they were appointed under earlier regimes. Over 100 unqualified muster roll teachers also received final chances to meet eligibility standards this year. The protest ended peacefully.
