In 2024, Mizoram became a well-liked travel destination, drawing more over 52,000 tourists from all across the nation and the globe. 52,235 tourists traveled to the state in the previous year, according to data released by the state tourism agency. Of these, 10,051 were foreign visitors from all around the world, while 42,184 were domestic visitors. Additionally, the tourism data revealed that more than 2.19 lakh visitors visited Mizoram between April 2023 and March 2024. Among them were 3,884 foreign visitors from at least 14 nations, including Israel, Japan, Britain, and the United States.
Even though the number was remarkable, it was only slightly less than the record of 2.22 lakh visitors in 2022–2023, which comprised 3,551 foreign visitors and 2.18 lakh domestic tourists. According to the authorities, the tourists visited Mizoram for a variety of reasons, including private visits to family, business, and exploration. Travelers seeking a non-touristy experience are nevertheless drawn to the state by its distinctive landscape, history, and distinctive local culture. The COVID-19 epidemic had a significant effect on Mizoram’s tourism industry.
In 2020–21, the state received a pitiful 20,564 tourists. However, in 2021–2022, 1.32 lakh tourists visited. In 2024, Aizawl, the capital city, received 24,559 domestic and 822 foreign visitors, making it the most visited destination in Mizoram. With 5,500 visitors, including 497 foreign visitors, Champhai district came next. With 2,714 domestic and 75 foreign visitors last year, the Lunglei district also experienced a notable surge. The rising figures confirm the state’s standing as a must-see location in Northeast India and show a positive trend for the tourism sector.
