The successful conclusion of the Mizoram Bird Census, Chapchar Awllen Sava Chhiarpui 2024 (CASC2024), marks another milestone in the conservation efforts of Mizoram. With the collaboration between Conservation Mizoram and the Sailam Ecological Conservation Society, this initiative not only tallied and documented approximately 200 bird species but also raised awareness about the importance of biodiversity conservation.

The presence of notable bird species such as the Spot-breasted Laughingthrush, Grey Peacock Pheasant, Mount Victoria Babax, Chin Hills Wren Babbler, Green Cochoa, Himalayan Shrike Babbler, and Oriental Darter underscores the rich avian diversity of Mizoram. It’s heartening to see efforts to protect areas like the Sailam Bird Sanctuary, which face threats from urbanization and population growth.

By conducting censuses in various locations including Mount Phawngpui, Mount Chalrang Hill, Kolasib district wetlands, Lawngtlai, and Pawlrang, the scope of understanding Mizoram’s avifauna broadens. The Sailam Bird Sanctuary, a haven for over 270 bird species in the past, continues to attract attention from both local conservationists and international ornithologists.
