Mizoram celebrates heritage as Indigenous Games and Cultural Festival 2026 begins in Aizawl

Art and Culture Minister Pu Lalsawivunga today inaugurated the DD Mizoram Indigenous Games and Cultural Festival 2026, jointly organised by Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) and the Mizoram Indigenous Games Association (MIGA).

Addressing the gathering, the Minister emphasised that every community possesses its own unique traditions and cultural practices, and stressed the importance of preserving and promoting them. He welcomed the organisation of the indigenous games festival, expressing hope that it would contribute to the strengthening and wider recognition of Mizo culture.

Pu Lalsawivunga also noted that modern sporting influences are increasingly shaping the interests of Mizo youth. In this context, he commended DDK and MIGA for taking the initiative to promote traditional Mizo sports, describing the event as an important platform to raise awareness among younger generations while encouraging greater appreciation of indigenous games.

The festival is scheduled to run over three days, from 18 to 20 March. Sporting events will commence daily at 10:00 am, with evening cultural programmes continuing from 7:30 pm. The event will feature performances by well-known singers, college artistes, and showcases of traditional dances.

A wide range of indigenous games will be contested, including In-Buan, Insuknawr (in multiple categories, including mixed events), In-Saihruipawh (open), In-Arpasual (mixed), Kalchhet (mixed relay and individual), Invawr (mixed), Kawibah (single), and a 100-metre race open to all participants, including tourists.

Participants have been advised to attend in traditional attire, in keeping with the cultural spirit of the festival. According to reports today’s participants comply to the organisers advisory.
