Mizoram showcased outstanding performance at the 1st North-East Ju-Jitsu Championship in Guwahati, Assam, from January 31 to February 2, securing nine medals (six gold and three bronze). The six-member Mizoram contingent, consisting of five athletes and a coach sponsored by the Ju-Jitsu Association of Mizoram (JAM), had its travel, accommodation, food, and logistics expenses covered by the association. Competing in various formats of Ju-Jitsu, Mizoram emerged as one of the most successful teams at the championship, which gathered athletes from across the North-East, underscoring the sport’s rising popularity in the region. Ju-Jitsu, comprising three main disciplines—Ne-Waza (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), Contact Fighting (under MMA rules), and the Fighting System—has been increasing in recognition due to efforts from trainers and organizers, allowing local athletes to participate in broader competitions. This martial art, endorsed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), is considered one of the fastest-growing globally, noted for its self-defense applications, and has been confirmed as a medal event at the Asian Games.
