Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated a Arecanut (Kuhva) Processing Unit established by SSB Agro in Buhchangphai on Friday. The event was attended by Agriculture Minister P.C. Vanlalruata as Guest of Honour, along with Deputy Speaker Pu Lalfamkima and MLA Pu Lalmuanpuia Punte.
In his address, the Chief Minister highlighted Mizoram’s arecanut cultivation spanning 30,000 hectares, with an estimated 200,000 quintals produced in 2024-25. He described it as a stable livelihood and noted government support through schemes like the Handholding Scheme and CM Special Package.
The Chief Minister praised the government’s crackdown on illegal arecanut trade, which has boosted farmer prices, and stressed the value of local processing.
He announced upcoming government units in Chemphai and Zamuang, set to operate next year. Commending SSB Agro’s high-capacity facility (processing 3,000 nuts per hour), he welcomed its procurement tie-up with MAMCOS, predicting benefits for many farmers.
Agriculture Minister Vanlalruata echoed the importance of processing for value addition and market stability, revealing plans for similar units for ginger, turmeric, and chilli.
The programme featured a technical report by Pu Sangbiak Lal Khuptong and concluded with a dedication prayer by Rev. Solomon Lalmuanpuia Khiangte.
