Mizoram will never agree to fence 404-km-long border with Myanmar as the Mizoram-Myanmar border was imposed by the colonial British rulers without the consent of the people living in both sides of the border, state chief minister Lalduhoma said. Addressing a meeting of Chin community in Indiana state of the United States on Thursday, Lalduhoma reiterated Mizoram’s stance that division of contiguous areas inhabited by ‘Zo’ people into three countries – India, Burma (Myanmar) and Bangladesh can never be accepted.

He said that proposals to fence the Mizoram-Myanmar will never be accepted by the ‘Zo’ people and the government of Mizoram. Lalduhoma called for cessation of hostilities and peace between the Chin National Army (CNA), Chin Brotherhood and Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA) in Chin state of Myanmar. He also appealed for peaceful co-existence by different Chin militia groups in Chin state with the Arakan Army (AA) militants. He said that while AA is not only stronger, but confrontation with the Rakhine-based insurgent group may result in spill over of the Myanmar conflict in Mizoram especially in Lawngtlai district.

The chief minister stated that they had held talks with the AA on the construction of the Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) and the latter expressed the wish that the road should be completed soon. He said that the Indian government and the state government of Mizoram also want early completion of the project as it will create more employment for the people living along the road.
