The Mizoram government is considering extending its anti-drug campaign, “Operation Jericho,” beyond the current March deadline, Home Minister K. Sapdanga said following a review of border security measures.
Launched on September 1, 2025, Operation Jericho is a joint initiative involving the Mizoram Police, the Mizoram Excise Department, and the Young Mizo Association to curb drug trafficking along the state’s international borders. The campaign was initially planned for four months but was later extended until March due to its continuing operations against cross-border narcotics networks.
As part of a high-level security assessment, Sapdanga visited the India-Myanmar border at Zochachhuah in Lawngtlai district. During the visit, he inspected an outpost of the Assam Rifles and reviewed land earmarked for the establishment of a permanent police facility.
The minister directed the Lawngtlai Deputy Commissioner to expedite the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for constructing a permanent checkpoint for the Mizoram Police at the border site. Officials believe that strengthening infrastructure and security presence along the frontier will help curb illegal trafficking and enhance surveillance.
Emphasising the need for improved monitoring, Sapdanga said the state requires a dedicated system to track individuals crossing the border. According to him, better documentation and monitoring of cross-border movement are essential to prevent illegal activities, particularly drug smuggling.
The Home Minister also addressed concerns raised by local residents and security personnel about poor internet connectivity in the border areas. He acknowledged that weak network coverage is currently affecting the timely submission of border transit reports and operational coordination.
The government is expected to review the progress of Operation Jericho before taking a final decision on whether to extend the campaign further. Authorities believe that continuing the initiative could strengthen the fight against drug trafficking and improve security along the state’s sensitive international border with Myanmar.
