Mizoram’ disaster management and rehabilitation department on friday declared the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak as State Specific Disaster for the State of Mizoram with condition that outbreak of ASF in the State in 2024 will be considered from the day when first case was this year. “As per the approval of State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), African Swine Fever (ASF) is declared as State Specific Disaster for the State of Mizoram and a notified natural calamity for 2024 in the State of Mizoram,” the notification issued by the DMR said. As per the decision of State Executive Committee (SEC) of the SDMA, assistance for the losses caused by this State Specific Disaster shall be met from State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) constituted as per Section A 8(1)(a) of Disaster Management Act, 2005.
Norms of assistance under State Disaster Response fund (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) as notified by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India for the fiscal 2022-23 to 2025-26 shall be applicable for the year 2024. Declaration of ASF outbreak as State Specific Disaster came after daily deaths due to have been dwindling day by day with only 6 deaths registered on Thursday. The total number of pig deaths due to ASF infections in the state this year has risen to 13,883 and the total number of pigs culled to 23,272 as of Friday.
Daily pig casualties on Friday, however was registered at 32 and daily culled at 76, all time high during the past one month. State animal husbandry and veterinary department attributed the sudden rise in daily pig casualties recorded on friday to receipt to cumulative figures received from southernmost Siaha district’s Lodaw village during the month due to communication snag from the one of the remotest villages bordering Myanmar. The officials said that Lodaw village registered 17 deaths and 55 pigs culled in a report submitted to the directorate of veterinary on friday.
