During the meeting, Governor Shri Indra Sena Reddy Nallu highlighted his observations from his recent visit to the Solid Waste Management Centre, stressing the need for collective effort among departments for efficient operation. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining the centre’s machinery to ensure effective accomplishment of its purpose. The Solid Waste Management Centre at Tuirial was constructed under the North East Capital Cities Development Implementation Programme (NERCCDIP) by the State Investment Programme Management and Implementation Unit (SIPMIU) of the Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation Department. It was inaugurated in 2019 and handed over to the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) in 2022.
According to the Aizawl Municipal Corporation, waste collected throughout Aizawl city is systematically gathered and managed daily. For this purpose, AMC employs 35 daily workers who are engaged in the operation of the centre. Around 190 garbage trucks collect approximately 119.42 tonnes of waste daily, which is then brought to the Solid Waste Management Centre (SWMC) at Tuirial. Of this, 89.09 tonnes consist of wet waste, while the remaining 30.33 tonnes consist of dry waste. The waste is sorted and about 7.98 tonnes of dry wastes are recycled daily, being sold to 11 scrap dealers approved by the AMC. Wet wastes are converted into manure by Mechanical Compost Plant since March of this year.
