Mizoram Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh engaged with 40 students and 4 teachers from Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep during their visit to Mizoram as part of the “Ashtalakshmi Darshan Youth Exchange Programme.” The Governor welcomed the students at Lok Bhavan, Aizawl, urging them to leverage the experience to understand Northeast India better. He noted that like the visiting regions, Mizoram is sparsely populated, boasts natural beauty, has limited large industries, and maintains extensive forest cover contributing to its favorable climate. Mizoram’s literacy rate is high, and it is poised to establish a State University in line with the National Education Policy 2020.
The Governor highlighted that Mizoram has been peaceful since the Mizoram Peace Accord of 1986, with notable developmental progress. He pointed to the recent inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line and emphasized plans to enhance rail connectivity throughout Mizoram, linking it with the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP). He acknowledged Mizoram’s agricultural potential and prospects in horticulture and aromatic plants, suggesting improved supply chains could spur economic growth. Finally, he wished students a memorable time during their stay.
The Ashtalakshmi Darshan Youth Exchange Programme, initiated by the Central Government’s DoNER Ministry, aims to foster national integration by facilitating cultural exchanges among students from various regions. The visiting group arrived in Mizoram on January 15, 2026, and will base their activities at Mizoram University, attending lectures on the history and culture of Northeast India, before departing on January 28, 2026.
