Students of the Mizoram Hindi Training College (MHTC) staged a protest by blocking the teaching faculty members from entering the college since Wednesday objecting the introduction of Yoga as one of the subjects from February this year saying that the subject is against the religious beliefs of the students. Spearheaded by the Mizo Hindi Zirlai Pawl (MHZP) or organization of Mizo Hindi students, the agitating students said that Yoga subject, which was not one of the original subjects in beginning of the current academic session was imposed on them in Hindi Shikshan Praveen and Hindi ShikshanParangat classes.

MHZP leaders met the Principal of the college on Monday and asked the latter to withdraw the Yoga subject as they are facing the second terminal examinations soon. “We also had written to Kendriya Hindi Shansthan, Agra about our grievances that Yoga is against our religious beliefs in the Christian-dominated state of Mizoram,” one of the MHZP leaders said.

The students ended picketing the faculty members from Thursday after reaching agreement with the college authorities, but warned that they will continue the stir if their demands are not met immediately. EOM
