Mizoram mourns the passing of World War II veteran at age 102

The Ministry of Defence, as conveyed by PRO Shillong, has issued a heartfelt tribute following the passing of Subedar Thanseia, Mizoram’s oldest World War II veteran, who succumbed to a heart attack on March 31st at the remarkable age of 102. Born on July 13, 1923, in Ruallung village, Mizoram, Subedar Thanseia was the eldest among seven siblings born to Suakliana (late) and Kapchhingi (late). He enlisted in the 1st Assam Battalion on December 1, 1941, displaying unwavering dedication to serve his country. Following his marriage to Lalthanzami, who passed away on October 3, 2009, they were blessed with four sons.

In his later years, Subedar Thanseia resided with his youngest son, H. Lalduhawma, alongside grandchildren Cindy Liandingpuii and Baby Liansangpuii, after the loss of his beloved wife. His tenure in the Assam Regiment concluded on December 16, 1969, with the distinguished rank of Subedar.  Throughout World War II, Subedar Thanseia exemplified valor and patriotism, proudly contributing to India’s triumph over Japanese forces during the conflict. He played a pivotal role in the Assam Regiment’s victorious participation in all six Battles of Honor, notably commemorated on Jessami Day, marking the regiment’s triumphs in the war.

Beyond his military service, Subedar Thanseia continued his commitment to public service. In 1972, he assumed the role of President of Tlangnuam Village Council, where he advocated for community welfare initiatives, including the establishment of a Post Office, where he served as Post Master. His dedication extended to ensuring access to communication infrastructure, voluntarily securing telephone connections for public use at a nominal fee of Re. 1.
