In a significant breakthrough, Mizoram police intercepted a heroin smuggling attempt and apprehended a Myanmar national in Aizawl on Saturday. The seizure, amounting to 3.547 kilograms of heroin valued at Rs. 1,06,41,000, marks a major success in the fight against drug trafficking. The operation unfolded following a tip-off received by ASI Zothantluanga Sailo of District Special Branch on May 25 regarding the suspected sale of heroin in the Selesih area of Aizawl. Acting swiftly, an Authorization Letter under Section 41(2) of the ND&PS Act was issued, empowering Sailo to take necessary actions, including search, seizure, and arrest.
Accompanied by a team and two independent witnesses from the Selesih locality, the police intercepted a black scooter (Access) near NEC Junction in Selesih. The scooter, carrying two large white nylon bags, was being driven by C.T Liana (25), a resident of Hmattung, Tahan, Myanmar. Upon inspection, the bags were found to contain 311 soap cases, each containing a reddish-brown powder suspected to be heroin.
The Mizoram police promptly seized the contraband and the scooter in the presence of the witnesses. Subsequent investigations revealed that the Myanmar national lacked valid documents to enter India, leading to his arrest. ASI Zothantluanga Sailo and his team, along with the accused and the seized articles, proceeded to Bawngkawn Police Station, where a case under BKN-PS C/No. 185/24 dt. 21.05.2024. u/s 21(c)/ 25 ND & PS Act r/w 14 Foreigners Act was registered.
