The Mizoram government is set to launch a major initiative to collect biometric and demographic data of over 35,000 Myanmar refugees currently residing in the state, a senior home department official confirmed on Sunday. The data collection is expected to start in the latter part of July.

The official stated that enrolment will take place online through the Foreigner Identification Portal, beginning in towns and villages with strong internet connectivity. All Myanmar nationals, including those who arrived in 2021 due to armed conflict involving Chin militant groups, will be included in the process.

He mentioned that Rs 38 lakh has been allocated for the initiative, with funding coming from the central government. Additional funds may be sanctioned if needed.

Due to poor internet access in some remote areas, offline enrolment methods may also be used. The district administrations, led by deputy commissioners, will oversee the entire exercise and receive all necessary equipment.

Champhai district reportedly hosts the highest number of Myanmar refugees at present.
