Famiangi, believed to be Mizoram’s oldest recorded woman at the age of 117, passed away peacefully at her residence in Pangkhua village, Lawngtlai district, early on the morning of July 22.

Born in 1908, her remarkable life spanned three centuries, witnessing major historical transitions from British colonial rule to independent and modern India. Her age was confirmed through local records maintained by community leaders. Famiangi was the daughter of Huathmung and Suisung and was married to the late Heinawna, with whom she had eight children.

She leaves behind one of the region’s largest extended families, consisting of 195 descendants, including 51 grandchildren, 122 great-grandchildren, and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

Famiangi remained mentally and physically active well into old age. She gained statewide recognition in 2023 when she participated in the Mizoram State Assembly Elections and was honoured by the state election commission for her civic involvement.

In recent months, her health gradually declined due to age-related conditions. Despite the dedicated care provided by her family, she passed away at 7:00 am on July 22, surrounded by loved ones.
