The Mizo National Front (MNF), Mizoram’s main opposition party, has accused Chief Minister Lalduhoma of secretly attempting to relocate the state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl, located in his home constituency of Serchhip, without informing the public.
Speaking to party members in Aizawl, MNF general secretary Zodinpuia alleged that Lalduhoma had submitted a request to the Centre for financial support for the capital shift, without consulting the citizens. Quoting official correspondence, Zodinpuia said that on April 24, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs contacted the Mizoram chief secretary and the state’s resident commissioner in Delhi, seeking a Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the proposed capital move.
He further accused the CM of misleading the public by promoting Thenzawl merely as a “peace city” to reduce congestion in Aizawl, while allegedly hiding the broader plan of making it the new capital. Zodinpuia called this a breach of public trust and demanded transparency.
Thenzawl, situated 93 km from Aizawl, is a tourist hotspot known for its handloom industry, golf course, and Vantawng waterfalls. Lalduhoma had earlier mentioned plans to develop it for 10 lakh residents, with Centre’s support. So far, the Chief Minister’s Office has not responded to the allegations.
