Seven elected members of Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) belonging to the Mizo National Front (MNF) submitted a letter to the deputy commissioner of Aizawl districton Friday and staked the party’s claim to form the next government in the SHC. The MNF bagged 7 seats in the just concluded election to 12-member SHC held on November 5 while the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) scored 4 seats and the Congress securing 1 seat. The MNF bagged 5 seats and its pre-poll ally the Hmar People’s Convention(Reformed) won 2 seats and managed to get majority.

Meanwhile, MNF leaders claimed that the party should have secured 8 seats if the returning officer (RO) of New Vervek seat did his election duty in an unbiased manner. Recounting of 966 votes polled in New Vervek was held on November 6 in Aizawl after which the ZPM candidate was declared as the winner. The incident triggered tension since the night of Tuesday while counting of votes was undertaken under the supervision of the RO in a obfuscated manner, MNF leaders claimed.

As the situation in the constituency continues to be volatile, Aizawl district deputy commissioner Lalhriatpuia on Friday issued an order under section 163(1) of BharatiyaNagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023 prohibiting assembly of more than 5 persons within the SHC constituency to prevent any law and order problems.
