The number of pig casualty in Mizoram due to raging African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak crosses 11,000 mark (11,062) while the number of pigs culled to prevent further spread of the dreaded porcine disease rises to 19,370 as of Tuesday. State animal husbandry and veterinary department officials said that daily pig casualty of 129 was registered on Tuesday with Lawipu neighbourhood in Aizawl and Sairang village near Aizawl alone recording 44 and 27 pig deaths respectively. The pig deaths were reported from 4 districts, the veterinary officials said, adding that 214 villages are declared as infected by the outbreak.
At least 122 pigs were culled in 6 districts on Tuesday with the largest number of pigs culled in a small Lungtan village in north eastern Khawzawl district being 26. Meanwhile, records of the state animal husbandry and veterinary department said that 47,351 pigs died between 2021 and 2023 while 25,234 pigs were culled during the same period. The ASF outbreak in the state was first witnessed in 2021 with the first case being detected in Bangladesh border Lungsen village in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district on March 21 that year.
Earlier, compensation for pigs being culled have been disbursed to 2,488 families while none of the families who culled their pigs during this year have been paid compensation till date.
