Muhurat Trading 2025: what makes this year’s session unique?

Estimated read time 1 min read

India’s stock markets will hold a special one-hour Muhurat Trading session on October 21, 2025, coinciding with Diwali’s Laxmi Pujan. Notably, for the first time since 1957, this session will take place in the afternoon from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm, instead of the usual evening timing. Muhurat Trading is rooted in cultural and astrological beliefs, symbolizing an auspicious start to the financial new year, where investments made during this hour are thought to bring prosperity and good fortune.

Muhurat Trading is a designated one-hour window on Diwali when the stock exchanges operate normally, with regular order placements, trade executions, and settlements. While largely symbolic, many investors make small “token” trades during this time, often focusing on established blue-chip stocks.

In 2025, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will observe Muhurat Trading on Tuesday, October 21. The pre-open session will begin at 1:30 pm, followed by the main session, and order changes will be permitted until around 2:55 pm. This shift to afternoon trading has been welcomed by brokers for reducing workload and offering better daylight conditions.
