Addressing a National Girl Child Day programmer, Mizoram Home Minister K Sapdanga on Friday urged departments to strengthen ties and collaboration to create a safe environment for the girl child and promote their rights and empowerment. National Girl Child Day was observed in Mizoram on Friday as the actual day falls on Saturday, a holiday in the state. Speaking at the main celebration in Aizawl, Sapdanga stressed the need to create an environment that ensures the safety of girl children irrespective of their social background. The day was also celebrated in Lawngtlai along with the launch of the 100-Day Awareness Campaign on the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act at the CMO Conference Hall. The event was graced by Donny Lalruatsanga, Deputy Commissioner as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, Donny Lalruatsanga extended his greetings to all participants and expressed appreciation for the well-planned programme. He emphasized that the safety, dignity, and empowerment of women and girl children are matters of global importance, which is why such observances are celebrated worldwide. Quoting the saying, “When women are empowered, the nation and society grow stronger; when women are enlightened, the world becomes brighter,” he stressed the need to build a safer and more progressive world for women.
The Chief Guest noted that in earlier times, women’s status in society was considerably low due to the dominance of a male-centric social structure. However, he acknowledged that the status of women has improved significantly over time. He highlighted the continuous efforts of both the Government of India and the State Government in promoting women’s empowerment through various initiatives. He encouraged women to equip themselves with skills and knowledge to embrace a brighter and more progressive future and called upon society to act as facilitators in this journey. He further stated that the collective efforts of the Government, NGOs, and Churches are essential in ensuring the overall development and empowerment of women. Everyone, he said, has a shared responsibility to support women in realizing their aspirations and achieving their full potential. Recognizing that women often face numerous challenges in their life journeys, he urged all stakeholders to extend support from this day onward.
