NCERT textbook blunder: Manipur’s ‘Mukna Kangjei’ misattributed as Mizoram’s indigenous game

A significant oversight by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has sparked controversy as the indigenous game of Manipur, Mukna Kangjei, was erroneously labeled as a popular game of Mizoram in a recent textbook publication. Published under the auspices of SCERT, New Delhi, and endorsed by NCERT, the textbook titled “Learning through Traditional Games” falsely identifies Mukna Kangjei as a game native to Mizoram.

This egregious error, highlighted by the Manipur Education (S) Department Physical Education Teachers’ Association, has prompted widespread criticism and demands for immediate rectification. In a press release, the association expressed dismay over the misrepresentation, emphasizing the need for swift correction by the relevant authorities. The textbook, spanning 88 pages and detailing indigenous games from various states, erroneously attributes Mukna Kangjei to Mizoram on page 24, causing uproar among the people of Manipur.

Demanding accountability, the association has reached out to both the State Council of Educational Research and Training in New Delhi and NCERT headquarters to acknowledge the mistake and undertake corrective measures without delay.
