All eight Northeastern states are set to jointly host the 39th National Games in 2027, following a unique model proposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs. This collaborative plan received unanimous backing during the first regional meeting of sports ministers, secretaries, and state Olympic association officials, held behind closed doors in Shillong on July 26. The meeting was chaired by Meghalaya Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri and co-chaired by Arunachal Pradesh Sports Minister Kento Jini.

Previously, the region hosted the National Games in 1999 (Manipur) and 2007 (Assam). Representatives from all eight states — Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura — discussed strategies for implementing the shared-hosting format. Meghalaya was initially scheduled to host the event alone, but accepted the joint model to foster regional unity, according to John F Kharshiing, MSOA working president.

Warjri noted that the event would enhance youth involvement and sports infrastructure. The group plans to meet again to finalize operational and logistical arrangements for the Games.
