On Thursday, November 20, the newly elected NDA administration will take the oath of office at the historic Gandhi Maidan, only days after winning a landslide victory in the Bihar Assembly elections. The question of whether Nitish Kumar would serve as chief minister for an unprecedented tenth term is still up for debate. As the creation of the new administration picks up steam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to attend the ceremonial swearing-in event. PM Modi had spoken at over a dozen rallies throughout the election campaign, promising voters that he would “return for the swearing-in of a new NDA.” Nitish Kumar, who has broad backing from NDA allies for another term, will hold his final Cabinet meeting at 11:30 am prior to the ceremony.

It is anticipated that the Cabinet would adopt a resolution calling for its dissolution, following which Kumar will formally submit his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, opening the door for the creation of a new government. The NDA won 202 out of 243 seats after putting on a dominant run in the polls. With 89 seats, the BJP was the largest party, closely followed by JD(U) with 85. While tiny partners Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) won nine seats combined, Union Minister Chirag Paswan’s LJP (RV) won 19 seats. The RJD-led Mahagathbandhan, on the other hand, only managed to secure 35 seats, which was a significant loss.
